SORA 2.5 Is Now Official: A New Milestone for UAS Risk Assessment in Europe
September 29, 2025
On September 29, EASA formally released the new SORA 2.5 methodology, which now becomes the mandatory reference for risk assessment in Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) operations within the specific category. This update marks a significant milestone toward greater standardization, clarity, and operational maturity across the European drone sector.
In Spain, AESA will exclusively adopt SORA 2.5 starting November 18, 2025. From that date on, all operational authorization requests must follow the new methodology, replacing all previous versions.
At BCN Drone Center, we are fully prepared to support operators throughout this transition. Our team has updated knowledge, hands-on experience, and the technical rigor required to apply SORA 2.5 effectively, offering specialized UAS regulatory consulting services that simplify the process and ensure full compliance.

What’s New in SORA 2.5?
The SORA 2.5 update introduces key improvements aimed at simplifying the methodology, increasing clarity, and enhancing the precision of risk assessments:
Enhanced Ground Risk Assessment — SORA 2.5 introduces a more quantitative, less subjective approach to evaluating ground risk, ensuring greater consistency among operators and authorities.
Clearer Wording — Significant efforts have been made to simplify and clarify the text, making the methodology easier to understand and correctly implement.
Reduced Interpretation Variability — The update aims to minimize differences between EU Member States, promoting more harmonized application across Europe.
Restructured OSOs — The Operational Safety Objectives (OSOs) have been reorganized to provide a more logical structure, improving navigation and practical application.
