UAS Geographical Zones Course
Understand where you can fly in Spain, and what’s required to do it safely and legally.
Drone operations aren’t just defined by the type of mission or the category of flight. Where you fly matters just as much.
In Spain, with the publication of Real Decreto 517/2024, the rules governing the use of airspace and UAS geographical zones have been updated and consolidated. This course is designed to help UAS operators and pilots fully understand these new regulations, and how to operate compliantly within them.
Why This Course Matters
Since the entry into force of EU Regulation 2019/947, drone operations in Europe have been governed by both operational categories (Open, Specific, Certified) and UAS Geographical Zones, which are airspace volumes where certain conditions, restrictions, or prohibitions apply.
These zones are defined by each Member State and can:
Prohibit or restrict UAS operations for safety, security, privacy, or environmental reasons
Require specific authorizations or prior notifications to operate
Impose technical requirements (e.g., Remote ID, geofencing)
Limit operations to certain classes of UAS or specific equipment
Introduce local environmental regulations or exemptions
Override some Open Category permissions
The Real Decreto 517/2024 now establishes the Spanish framework for UAS airspace use, making it essential for operators to understand how to interpret and apply these requirements to every mission, regardless of whether the operation is EASA or non-EASA.
