Open Category
Your trusted guide through the first steps of legal and safe drone operations
Operating a drone in the Open Category is often the starting point for many UAS operators. While this category is designed to be more accessible, it still comes with a set of important legal and technical requirements. Our goal is to help you navigate them with confidence.
What is the Open Category?
This category applies to UAS operations that are considered low risk and don't require prior operational authorisation or declaration. In simple terms, your operation likely falls within the Open Category if:
Your drone weighs less than 25 kg at take-off
The remote pilot maintains Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) at all times
The drone remains within 120 meters of the ground
You do not transport dangerous goods or drop materials from the air
Even within these boundaries, it’s essential to comply with specific legal obligations, and that’s where we can help.
