Some operations go beyond the Open Category and don’t quite fit within the predefined Standard Scenarios. That’s where Operational Authorisations come in.
The Specific Category covers medium-risk operations that fall outside Open Category rules. If your planned flight doesn’t comply with Open Category limits and isn’t covered by any Standard Scenario (STS), you’ll need to apply for an Operational Authorisation from your National Aviation Authority (NAA) before flying.
